UV-C effective against Covid-19
Covid-19 on objects can be effectively destroyed with UV-C light. This was established by the research bureau Eurofins on behalf of UV Smart.
It has been known for a while that viruses and bacteria are destroyed by UV-C light. It was therefore likely that this would also apply to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. But because it is a new virus, this had not yet been demonstrated specifically. Therefore, this has now been investigated with the UV-C disinfection equipment of UV Smart from Delft. The research was carried out by Eurofins Biolab in Italy,
viruses isolated from animals. Coronavirus material was exposed for 25 seconds under controlled conditions in UV-C disinfection equipment, the D25 from UV Smart. After this standard cycle, 99.99% of the virus material was indeed rendered harmless.
These robust results support this new, validated disinfection method.
"Scientists and medical professionals were confident about this, and these robust results support this new, validated disinfection method. Our equipment is already being used in care centres and hospitals to minimise the spread of microorganisms and create a safer care environment," says Daan Hoek, one of the founders of UV Smart: "These results do not mean that all sources of UV light can render the corona virus harmless, such as sunlight or UV lamps in consumer electronics. This research shows that the powerful light source in our equipment is effective; moreover, the patented Impelux™ technology does not damage the irradiated material, and no radiation can escape from the UV box, which is very safe.
In order to meet the increased international demand for this equipment - which is now CE-certified - UV Smart has recently scaled up production.
